Updated October 14, 2026.
Someone sent you a PSD, an .ai, an IDML or a DXF and you don't own the program that made it. For most formats, the matching Craft app opens it in a browser, and you can edit and save without installing anything. Two formats have no free reader at all (After Effects' .aep and Premiere's .prproj), InDesign's .indd opens only as a flat picture, and AutoCAD's .dwg doesn't open in a browser. Each has a workaround below.
The second thing to check is the last column: whether you can save back to the same format. That decides if you can return the file to the person who sent it.
Jump to: photos, vector, layouts and PDF, video and audio, Office files, CAD.
Photos and images
Photoshop files open with their layers; camera raw files open in a Lightroom-style developer.
| File | Opens in | Saving |
|---|---|---|
.psd, .psb | PhotoCraft | Yes, as layered PSD or PSB |
.dng, .cr2, .arw, .raf, .rw2, .pef | LightCraft | Export JPEG, PNG, TIFF or WebP; the raw file is never changed |
.cr3, .nef | LightCraft | As above. Lossless and C-RAW CR3 and standard NEF decode fully; other variants show the camera's embedded preview |
.orf, .srw | LightCraft | Uncompressed files only |
.heic | PhotoCraft | Opens; save as PSD, PNG, JPEG or WebP |
.tif (layered), .ora, .pdn, Affinity | PhotoCraft | Opens; save as PSD or export |
Vector artwork and UI designs
Illustrator files open fine; what goes back to Illustrator is plain artwork.
| File | Opens in | Saving |
|---|---|---|
.ai | VectorCraft | Saves a PDF-compatible .ai without Illustrator's editing data, or exports SVG, PDF or PNG. Opens PDF-compatible .ai files, which is what Illustrator saves by default |
.eps | VectorCraft | Exports EPS, SVG, PNG or PDF |
.svg, .svgz, .emf | VectorCraft | Yes, SVG |
.fig | No free browser app | Not in a browser. FigCraft's desktop app opens .fig files on a best-effort basis |
Layouts and PDFs
InDesign's own .indd format has no free reader. Its exchange format, IDML, does.
| File | Opens in | Saving |
|---|---|---|
.idml | DesignCraft | Yes, IDML; also PDF/X-4, PDF/A-2b, PNG and EPUB |
.indd | No free browser app | No free layout app opens it for editing; Photopea shows it as a layered image. Ask the sender for an IDML (in InDesign: File › Export, format InDesign Markup) |
.pdf | PdfCraft | Yes, PDF. Merge, split, fill, sign, comment, redact, protect |
Video, motion graphics and audio
Media files open fine. Project files from Premiere and After Effects don't, but Premiere can hand its timeline over.
| File | Opens in | Saving |
|---|---|---|
.mp4, .mov, .mkv, .webm, .mxf | FilmCraft | Edit and export H.264 MP4 |
.srt, .vtt, .scc | FilmCraft | Yes; captions as a sidecar file or burned into the video |
.prproj | No free browser app | No. In Premiere, export the sequence as Final Cut Pro XML or AAF; FilmCraft imports both, plus FCPXML, OpenTimelineIO and EDL |
Lottie (.json, .lottie) | EffectCraft | Yes, Lottie; or render a video |
.aep, .aepx, .mogrt | No free browser app | No free app opens them. Rebuild the comp in EffectCraft, which uses the same layer, keyframe and effect names |
.wav, .aiff, .flac, .mp3 | SoundCraft | Imported into a session; bounce a mix to WAV, AIFF or FLAC, save the session as .scraftz |
.ptx (Pro Tools session) | No free browser app | Ardour, a free desktop studio, imports basic Pro Tools sessions (audio regions and MIDI notes) |
Word, Excel and PowerPoint files
The current Office formats open in a tab. The oldest ones are better in LibreOffice.
| File | Opens in | Saving |
|---|---|---|
.docx, .docm, .dotx, .doc | WordCraft | Saves .docx (never .doc); exports PDF |
.odt, .rtf, .md, .html, .tex, .txt | WordCraft | Saves .docx; exports back to .odt, .rtf, .md, .html, .tex or .txt |
.xlsx, .xlsm, .xls, .csv, .tsv | GridCraft | Saves .xlsx (macros are kept but never run); exports PDF and CSV |
.ods, .xlsb | GridCraft | Values only, no formulas |
.pptx, .potx, .ppsx | DeckCraft | Saves .deckcraft; Export writes a .pptx copy or a PDF |
.ppt, .pptm, .odp | No free browser app | LibreOffice (free desktop app) opens and saves them |
GridCraft's browser version can't display Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Hebrew or Thai text yet; for a workbook in those scripts, use LibreOffice or GridCraft's desktop app.
CAD drawings
DXF opens in a browser; DWG needs a desktop app or a conversion first.
| File | Opens in | Saving |
|---|---|---|
.dxf (R12 to 2018) | CADCraft | Yes, in the drawing's own DXF version (new drawings as 2018). Files up to 256 MB |
.dwg | No free browser app | Not in a browser. CADCraft's desktop app opens DWG R13 to 2018, LibreCAD reads DWG, and the free ODA File Converter turns DWG into DXF |
Before you send the file back
- Fonts. A browser can't use the fonts on your computer, so text set in a font the app doesn't ship is drawn with a substitute and can reflow. Fine for reading and small fixes; for final layouts, install the desktop app, which uses your fonts.
- Linked pictures. IDML and many layout files point to images stored next to them. Ask for the images too, or a packaged folder, or you will place them again by hand.
- The format you save. An .ai saved by VectorCraft has lost Illustrator's editing data, a .pptx edited in DeckCraft goes back through Export as a copy, and a .doc comes back as .docx. Tell the other person which format to expect.
The Craft apps are young (alpha or earlier), so open a copy rather than your only original, and save a download as soon as the edit is done: most browser builds have no autosave. Online vs desktop lists what each browser version leaves out.
